Chapter 1

  1. How do vector  images differ from bitmap  images?

    Vector files describe images mathematically and are scalable .  Bitmaps plot images on a pixel-by-pixel basis and are not scalable.

  2. What type of image  file type would you use if you wanted to display a photograph on your website?

    JPEG

  3. What image  file type does Fireworks use to save your work

    PNG

  1. What are the main areas of the Fireworks workspace?

    1. Toolbox
    2. Toolbars
    3. Status Bar
    4. Menu  Bar
    5. Panels

  2. How do you undock and dock the Menus and Toolbox ?

    {Click} on an area that doesn’t contain a button and drag it away from it’s current position.

  3. How do you dock and undock Panels?

    {Click} on a Panel’s tab and drag to either dock or undock it

  4. How do you reset the Fireworks Workspace to its default settings?

    If you wish to restore the layout of your panels and menus back to their default setting you must go into your Fireworks program folder and delete the Fireworks4.ini file.

  5. How do you create custom Panel Layouts ?

    Position your panels the way you want them and select Commands /Panel Layout from the Menubar

  1. What is the default resolution of a new Fireworks Document?  Why?

    72 pixels per inch is the default resolution because it’s the standard resolution of pages viewed on the world wide web.

  2. What are the two ways that you magnify a Fireworks document?

    • The Zoom  Tool
    • The Document Magnification  drop down menu

  3. How does the Info Panel  describe color information?

    By default the Info Panel  gives Hexidecimal color information.

  4. How do you create a command using the History Panel ?

    Select a range of steps from the History Panel  and save it by selecting Save Command from the Panel’s pop out menu.

  5. How do you edit your command list?

    Select Command/Edit Command from the Menu .

  1. Which selection tool would you use to isolate an irregular shaped object?

    The Lasso Tool

  2. How do you create multiple selections in the same document?

    Hold down the [SHIFT] key to add additional selections to your initial selection.

  3. What is the difference between a selection with a “Hard Edge” and an “Anti-alias ed Edge”?

    A selection with an “Anti-Aliased” edge softens the transition from the edge of an image  or Selection to the color the edge is placed against.  It does this by creating pixels of a color that are somewhere in between that of your selection and the background it sits on. 

    A “Hard Edge” has no gradation at all.  The pixels are either the color of the foreground or the background with nothing inbetween.

  4. How does the Magic Wand  Tool make selections?

    The Magic Wand  makes selections based on color.

  5. How do you increase or decrease the effectiveness of the Magic Wand  Tool?

    By adjusting the Tolerance Slider.
Chapter 5

  1. How does the Line tool differ from the Pen Tool ?

    The Line tool allows you to draw individual straight line segments while the Pen Tool  allows you to draw multiple segments. 

  2. How do you create a curved line segment?

    With the Pen Tool  {Click} and drag while holding down your mouse button.  Release your mouse button and you will have a curved line segment.

  3. How do you add a new point to a line segment?

    Select the Pen Tool  and {Click} on a selected line segment wherever you want your point it will be added.

  4. How does the tolerance setting affect the way the Paint Bucket Tool works?

    Increasing the tolerance broadens the range of color that the Paint Bucket will affect.

  5. What type of content does the Freeform tool modify and how does it modify it?

    The Freeform Tool modifies Vector Content by pushing and pulling any path that it is dragged over.  How much of an effect it has is dependent on how long the user holds down their mouse button while dragging.

  6. How does the Eraser Tool  function in Object Mode ?

    The Eraser changes to a Knife that can cut vector  content with straight line segments.

Chapter 6

  1. Why would you want to Group  your content?

    Grouping allows you to keep track of associated content. 

  2. What is the difference between Grouping and Joining?

    Grouping is a loose association of various paths.  Joining creates one composite path out of many separate paths.

  3. What happens when you Split content that was previously Joined? 

    The composite path is broken up into its original components with all taking on the color characteristics of the bottom object in the stacking order.

  4. How do you go about selecting vector  content that is buried underneath other content?

    Use the Select Behind  Tool  

  5. How do you Convert Text to a Path ?

    Select the text that you want to convert and then select Text/Convert to Path  from the Menu  Bar.

Chapter 7

  1. How can you tell if a Layer  is locked?

    In the Layers  Panel you will see a lock icon to the left of the label for the Layer  in question.

  2. How do you create a new Layer ? (Describe 2 ways)

    Select “New Layer ” from the Layers  Panel pop out menu

    {Click} on the New Layer  button at the bottom of Layers  Panel

  3. How do you label a Layer  and Object

    {Double-click} on the Layer   or Object label in the Layer Panel and input a name in the field that appears.

  4. How do you change the stacking order of objects within a Layer ?

    Use the Alignment  buttons on the Modify Toolbar  or move Objects up or down the stacking order in the Layer  Panel by {Clicking} on their label and dragging

  5. How do you toggle visibility in a Layer ?

    In the Layers  Panel you will see an eye icon to the left of the Layer  labels.  {Click} it on or off to toggle visibility.

Chapter 8

  1. What’s the difference between Kerning  and Leading ?

    Kerning  is the spacing between individual characters while Leading  is the spacing between characters as a whole.

  2. Why would you want to Anti-alias  your text?

    Anti-alias ing smoothes out the edges of your text.

  3. How do you change the appearance of a Stroke?

    Modify the settings of a selected Stroke in the Stroke Panel .

  4. How do you add a texture to a Fill?

    Select a texture from the Fill Panel ’s Texture  drop down menu and adjust the visibility slider so you can see it.

  5. How do you adjust the tonal qualities of your images?

    By adjusting the settings in the Curves  and Levels  dialog boxes.

  6. What makes using Photoshop  Plug-ins  problematic?

    If you happen to have used them anybody who wants to edit your documents must also have Photoshop  Plug-ins  installed if they are going to see their effect.

Chapter 9

  1. How do you convert a graphic into Symbol ?

    Select the graphic that you want to convert to a Symbol  by {Right Clicking} on it.  Select “Convert to Symbol”  from the context sensitive menu that appears.

  2. Can you change the color of an Instance ?  Why or why not?

    No.  An Instance  retains the color properties of the Symbol  from which it was derived.

  3. How do you import a symbol into a document?

    Select “Import  Symbol …” from the Library  Panel s pop out menu and navigate your way to the folder that contains the symbol.

  4. What type of content can you modify using the Find and Replace Panel ?

    Text, Fonts , Colors, URLs

  5. What are the advantages of using the Project Log ?

    The Project Log  allows you easy access to all of your Work Documents and also lets you know when files were last modified.

  6. What file format does Fireworks use to save Batch Processing  Scripts?

    .JSF

Chapter 10

  1. What’s the difference between Intersecting and Cropping with Vector Objects?

    Intersecting objects will remove all non-overlapping material from them whereas a crop uses the top object in your stacking order to cut out material from every object beneath it.

  2. Why is the stacking order of objects important when you are making combinations?

    The objects that make up a combination take on the color of the bottom object in the stacking order.

  3. How do you use a vector  object to mask a photograph?

    Multiple select the photograph that you want to mask and the object that you want to mask it with.  Select “Modify/Masking Group /Mask to Image” from the Menu  to apply the Mask.

  4. How do you create a feathered edge for a photograph in a mask?

    Select “Modify/Masking Group /Mask to Path ” when you create your mask and feather the edge using the Fill Panel .

  5. How does Fireworks create transparency in a mask group?

    Through the use of an Alpha Channel.  White areas of your fill are completely transparent and black areas are completely opaque.  This effect works best if a gradient fill is applied to your Masking Group .

  6. How do you create a Text Mask ?

    Type the text into your document and then cut it out by either selecting Edit/Cut from the Menu  or using the [CTRL] X Keyboard Shortcut.  Select the photograph that you want to mask and select Edit/Paste as Mask from the Menu.

 

Chapter 11

  1. What does the Animation  Line  do?

    It allows you to control the direction and distance traveled by an Animated Symbol .

  2. How do you adjust the rotation and scale  of an Animated Symbol ?

    Select the Symbol  and adjust the settings in the Objects Panel.

  3. What happens to your Tweened animation if you distort one of the Instances you used to create it?

    An animation won’t work if you distort the Instance .

  4. What happens if you choose not to distribute your content to frames when create a Tweened animation?

    All of your animation content will be placed on the 1st Frame  and will not play when you push play on the Animation  Controller .

  5. Is it possible to create an animation with an object that isn’t a Library  Symbol ?  If so, how would you do it?

    Yes.  Select the object that you want to animate and then make your way to Modify/Animate/Animate Selection from the Menu .

  6. How do you adjust the timing of individual frames?

    Select “Properties” from the Frames Panel Flyout Menu  and adjust the timing of the your selected Frame .

  7. How do you set an animation to loop forever when viewed in a browser?

    Toggle the GIF Animation  Looping button at the bottom of the Frames Panel and select “forever” from the Menu .

Chapter 12

  1. How does a link attached to a Hotspot differ from a text or graphic link?

    A Hotspot sits on top of a graphic and is mapped out in coordinates.

  2. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using Hotspots?

    Multiple Hotspots can be attached to a graphic in almost any shape you want.  Hotspots can’t be rolled over like graphic links.

  3. Why would you want to attach an <alt> tag to your Hotspot?

    An <alt> tag will display a text label when the viewer moves their cursor over a Hotspot.

  4. Why would you want to slice your Image into smaller graphics?

    • To decrease the amount of time that a viewer will have to watch a blank screen.
    • To incorporate graphic rollovers into a document.
    • To allow for multiple optimization settings

  5. How do you adjust the “Auto-Name” setting for your slices?

    Change the “Auto-Name” settings in the HTML Setup dialog box

  6. What types of slices can you create with Fireworks?

    Text and Image Slices

  7. Why would you want to export a 1-pixel transparent shim along with the rest of your slices?

    A 1-pixel transparent shim will make sure that your table alignment settings are consistent across all browsers and at all display settings.

  1. Which frames does a Simple Rollover  Behavior  use?

    Frames 1 and 2

  2. What type of objects can have Behaviors applied to them?

    Hotspots and Slice Objects

  3. What sets a Nav Bar Image apart from other Swap Image  Behaviors?

    Nav Bar Images are associated with other Nav Bar Images on the same page.  Because they are associated they can all be controlled by one button.

  4. What is the procedure for applying a Swap Image  Behavior ?

    • Create an Up and Down State  for you button.
    • Place the Up State  on Frame  1 and Down State  on Frame 2
    • Put a Slice Object on top of the button
    • Use the Behaviors Panel  or Drag and Drop Behaviors  to set up your Rollover.

  5. How do Slice Objects relate to the creation of a Disjointed Rollover?

    The content of one Slice Object triggers the Swap Image  in another Slice Object

  6. How do Frames relate to the creation of a Disjointed Rollover?

    The original content of your rollover sits on Frame  1 and the rollover content sits in Frame 2 or other Frame depending on how much content your site has.

  7. What role does the Behavior  Control Icon  play in the creation of Drag and Drop Behaviors

    The Behavior  Control Icon  can be dragged using with the users mouse and dropped on the Slice or Hotspot.

  8. How do you place a background image  in every frame in your Frames Panel?

    Place the background image  on a Frame  all by itself and select “Share Layer ” from the Layers  Panel pop out menu.

  9. How do you add a Pop Up Menu  to a Button ?

    Select the button that you want to add the Pop Up Menu  to and navigate your way to Insert/Pop Up Menu … on the Menu.  Follow the directions and prompts in the dialog box.

  10. How does the Indent Button  relate to the creation of Sub Menu s?

    {Clicking} on the Indent Button  will designate Menu  Items as being part of a Sub Menu .

Chapter 14

  1. What is the difference between an Adaptive and Exact Color Palette?

    An Adaptive color palette can be used when converting an image  with 256 colors or more to a GIF.   An Exact color palette can be used when converting an image with 256 colors or less to a GIF.

  2. Why would you want to utilize a palette of WebSafe colors?

    So that users on any platform with an 8-bit color display can see your website as you designed it.

  3. How do you snap convert a color to the WebSafe Palette?

    Choose the color’s Swatch in the Swatches  Panel and {Click} on the “Snap  to Websafe” button.

  4. What is dithering?

    Dithering  is used in an 8-bit image  and simulates subtle transitions in color by mingling pixels of different colors.

  5. How do you increase or decrease the quality of a JPEG?

    Adjust the Quality Slider in the Optimization  Panel or input a figure in the Panel’s Quality field.

  6. How do you go about creating multiple compression settings in a single document?

    Use your Optimization  Panel to give your individual Slice Objects appropriate optimization settings.

  7. What are the benefits of Selective JPEG Compression ?

    Selective JPEG Compression  allows the designer to set various quality settings in a single image .  This is very useful if there is both a need for high clarity in certain parts of the image and small file sizes.

  8. How do you apply a JPEG Mask to an image .

    Create a selection with the selection tools and convert it by selecting Modify/Selective JPEG/Save Selection as JPEG Mask.  Adjust the settings for the Mask in the Optimize Panel .

Chapter 15

  1. What type of content can you not export with the Export Preview  Window? Why?

    You can’t export Slice or Hotspot Information with the Export Preview  Window because these settings are made through the Optimization  Panel.

  2. How do you use the Optimize to Size  option?

    {Click} on the Optimize to Size  button in the Export Preview  Window and enter a number in the field that appears.

  3. What are the limitations of the Optimize to Size  command?

    You compromise Image Quality if you require a low file size.

  4. What are the benefits of using the Export Wizard ?

    The Export Wizard  is very helpful if you don’t have much experience optimizing graphics. It does a great deal of the work for you.

  5. In what ways does Fireworks integrate with HTML editors?

    Fireworks will insert editor specific codes into your exported document.  It supports Dreamweaver , Front Page, and Go Live.  You can also have it create generic code which is absolutely free of extraneous code
